Happy Monday!
I love coffee and I've been learning more about it lately.
Did you know blond roasts have MORE caffine than dark roasts? They aren't cooked as long and there for retain more oils and caffeine. Oils give coffee their flavor.
You know what doesn't mix oil and water! When you slow drip your coffee you get less flavor than a pressure cooked coffee like espresso, because the oils have no where to go but into the drink!
Espresso machines can get pricey real quick. Rather than drop $120 on an espresso machine, spend $15 on a moka pot! It pressure cooks coffee for espresso strength on your stove top!
Fun Fact: One shot of espresso usually has the same amount of cafine as one cup of the same coffee.
These are the three pieces of the moka pot. The base the middle piece and the top pot. I know real technical right?
The base is filled with water. There will be a tiny hole for steam to escape. DON'T fill above that hole. The steam can't get out if you do. Next grab that funnel looking thing to the right.
That piece sits in the base and holds your coffee grounds.
I LOVE blueberry coffee (if it sounds like a weird mix, but it will blow your mind with amazingness!)
For espresso makers the water comes down through tightly packed coffee grounds.
It's the OPPOSITE in a moka pot. The water goes up! Fill this second piece with coffee but DON'T pack it in. The steam from the water will do that for you! The last part is the top piece that looks like a tea pot. You just screw that on top.
Put it all on a hot burner and you'll quickly have espresso bubbling forth. See how mine is shooting everywhere? Make sure you close the lid and don't try to photograph this part. You will hear a watery bubbling noise when it is all done.
My moka pot makes about 3 shots of espresso. You can use any coffee (not just espresso roast). Espresso is the way it's prepared. Espresso roasts tend to be darker than dark coffee which means they have LESS cafine than dark coffee. Crazy right?!
A light roast espresso is sweeter than regular coffee. I mix mine with a little bit of sugar and and fill it with milk and ice for a treat. Sometimes I fill an ice cube tray with espresso and freeze it for my coffee.
I hope you learned something. If you have coffee questions feel free to ask!!! I love talking coffee!
Your Moka pot is pretty fancy and adorable. It's like a bitty tea kettle and shaped like Chip from Beauty and the Beast! You know, when I moved here, I was a staunch tea drinker. I didn't think there was any way coffee could taste anything other than burnt and bitter. But your java knowledge has convinced me otherwise! I'd even be willing to try this espresso at your urging, light roast, of course, haha!
