Beauty: Eye Liner

Eye liner can be such a tricky thing. What is the best kind to use? What shape? How thick? What color?

Every face has a perfect eyeliner look. However it doesn't just depend on the face. You might choose a different eye liner look for work than you would for a rock concert.

For as many ways to line your eyes there are that many options for liner.

This is an example of a powder liner.

As an alternative, for years I lined my eyes with a damp, thin brush and a dark color of what ever eyeshadow color I'd picked for that day.

When I was younger I tried liquid eye liner. I understand that some of you may still be using this or perhaps you have even perfected wearing it. I never did. When I'm rushing out the door, I don't want to have to patiently put on my make-up and then clean it up and then correct my mistakes. NO THANK YOU. If you use this type of eyeliner consistently, I'm just mega impressed.

One liner I never really got into was in pencil form. The were too rough on my eyes. I wear contacts which I needed to wear to correctly put on my makeup. I needed something that was a blend between liquid and pencil.

I found my perfect eyeliner in October, when I had my Indie Cosmetics Epiphany.  It's a felt tip liner. Soft enough for my eyes with a controllable color.

The tips on the Tokidoki brand are my favorite. They have a wide flat edge as well as a slender side, but they cost $16.

I do own one, but I also have my $1 E.L.F. felt tip from Target.  The tip isn't as nice and it doesn't always want to go on over my eyeliner, but it's great to thrown in my purse and not have to be concerned about losing it.

My second favorite way to line my eyes would be gel. I have a hard time getting fine lines with this style. I use it mostly for wide lines.

It seems to be becoming the trend to boldly line your top lid and completely ignore your bottom like Diane Sawyer. It works but you have to be cautious.

Too often I've seen people who's bottom lid fades into their eye and soon they look like Lamb Chop. Lamb Chop has dark eyelashes on top and a dark line, but no actual eye.

Make sure your eye liner doesn't over power your ACTUAL eyes.

This post isn't enormous so I know I missed a few.  What are your favorite ways to line your eyes? What do you use? Do you use a combination.

  1. The felt tip eyeliner you gifted me helped me get used to lining my eyes. But, like you said, it's kind of like using a magic marker. When the edge frays or gets goopy, it can be frustrating! I feel like I did a good job with the liquid liner last week, on the days I used it. But I'm afraid, as a blonde with fair skin and blue eyes, that maybe black looks a little intense on my face. Next time I invest money in liquid liner, I'll probably go for a black/brown mix!

I like to line the top lid with a medium line right along the lash and leave the bottom alone, for the most part. My eyes are fairly small, so lining them all the way would make them look ever smaller.

  2. Have you tried a look like the bottom two images on the first picture? (Where you line the top and put just a little bit on the bottom? I find that it gives me great big anime eyes if I do it just right.
